“Although we do not wholly believe it yet, the interior life is a real life, and the intangible dreams of people can have a tangible effect upon the world.” James Baldwin

James Baldwin’s quote is the inspiration for our production company, Interior Life.

Inspired by American indies of the 70s-90s, international films, and plays ranging from naturalism to the theater of the absurd, BLEECKER’s influences run deep. This “funny, philosophical” picture’s intertwined vignettes are meant to entertain an audience – but with irony and affection rather than sarcasm or mockery. We are meant to see ourselves, even in some outrageous circumstances, and connect with these characters.

Maira Kalman’s whimsical drawings, Renoir and Trauffaut’s humanistic films, Vivian Maier and Saul Leiter’s photographs of everyday life, Almodovar and the Coen brothers’ madcap comedy, and Romare Bearden’s urban collages are among the soulful inspirations for BLEECKER, a tapestry of remarkable faces, voices and talent.

Edith Hagigi

EDITH HAGIGI

Screenwriter, Director and Producer

Edith Hagigi was born in Malawi, Africa but soon moved to New York. Her family lived in an apt on Bleecker Street for a few years, then they moved to Texas and, later, Massachusetts.

At home, they spoke Hebrew; so while she enjoyed interacting with her American friends, she always retained the insider/outsider perspective of someone bilingual in the States; and this sensibility has piqued her interest in disparate cultures and in people’s unique voices and stories.

During her studies at Boston University, from where she graduated summa cum laude with a major in film and a minor in business, she interned for Errol Morris and David Mamet. She returned to NY to work with Robert DeNiro at his Tribeca Productions.

Edith moved on to assist Ben Stiller on various productions and has continued her association with him on many films, plays, and web series. With Ben and his parents, Anne Meara and Jerry Stiller, she executive produced the www.StillerandMeara.com web series. In addition to more philanthropic work Stiller Foundation, she served as Production Executive for his Red Hour Films on THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY.

She also worked as a director’s assistant to filmmakers Jonathan Glazer and Fred Schepisi from script stage to theatrical release on a couple of their features.

Over the years, Edith has directed numerous shorts and produced events and videos for Tribeca Productions, Rwanda Cinema Centre, Volvo & Volvo for Life Awards, Best Buddies, Alex’s Lemonade, Mercedes… as well as EPK’s and other behind-the-scenes footage.

For writing, producing and directing BLEECKER, Edith has received the Boston International Film Festival’s Indie Spirit Award and SRFF’s Indie Vision Award.

PRAVEEN ELANKUMARAN

Director of Photography

Indian-born, New York-raised cinematographer Praveen Elankumaran loves to tell a great story– whether it’s a narrative, commercial, music video, or a documentary. He holds a MFA from the prestigious American Film Institute as well as a BFA from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, and he has lensed narrative projects from feature films to shorts that have played at film festivals around the world, as well as commercials for clients like H&M, ESPN, Adidas, Wieden+Kennedy, and TBWA/Chiat/Day.

Using authentic visual language and his own unbound curiosity, Praveen loves to tell subtle stories of the underrepresented, and collaborating with filmmakers who give voice to the voiceless. His work on Bleecker involved so many facets he seeks– an ensemble film of interwoven narratives reflecting New York City, with a diverse and stellar cast of all ages finding community and exploring change among themselves.
